Adriana San-Miguel, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering
Dr. San Miguel uses engineering to understand fundamental biological processes in living organisms, particularly the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. Her research lab applies genetic, biological, and engineering tools to study aging and behavior.
Fernando Garcia, Environmental Engineering
Dr. Garcia’s interests include air pollution, climate change, and environmental policy. His research group at NC State explores environmental challenges by using computer models to simulate interactions between natural and human systems.
Alejandra Ortiz, Coastal Engineering
Dr. Ortiz is interested in coastal evolution during rising sea levels. Dr. Ortiz uses numerical modeling, remote sensing, lab-based physical modeling, and fieldwork to better understand how different coastal environments are changing over the next 100 years.
Ashly Cabas, Geotechnical Engineering
Dr. Cabas investigates earthquake engineering, from seismic hazards to the response of soils and foundation systems to seismic loading. She focuses on the behavior of soils and rocks, the effects of local conditions on ground shaking, and the relationship between ground motion and infrastructure.
Celso Castro, Biological and Agricultural Engineering
Dr. Celso Castro studies streams and rivers. His research focuses on the processes that determine water, sediment, and contaminant transport through waterways and floodplains.
